Are You Listening? Festival is back to get Reading shaking on Saturday 28th April 2018, after their immensely successful fifth birthday earlier this year.
Since launching in 2013, the one-day Festival has raised more than £40,000 for Reading Mencap, a local charity that supports people with learning disabilities and their families. The critically acclaimed Festival won ‘Event of the Year’ at the inaugural Alt Reading Awards and has been nominated for two ‘Pride of Reading’ Awards and a Reading Cultural Award for ‘Best Festival’ in 2017.
The first acts to be announced for next year’s Festival include Bristol’s noisiest punks Idles, following the year of their lives which has seen them support both The Foo Fighters at the 02 Arena in London and The Maccabees on their farewell tour.
BBC 6 Music’s chief new-music champion Steve Lamacq returns to the festival, along with indie’s fastest rising stars Yonaka ahead of their support tour with The Amazons, and Brighton krautrock mavericks AK/DK following their ‘Album of the Day’ on BBC 6 Music this month.
Also coming in from out of town are Liverpool’s slinkiest haze-pop act Her’s, and the unstoppable Finnish bubblegum-punk racketeers Have You Ever Seen the Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS? who also have the best name in showbiz.
There is also heaps of local talent on the bill including BBC Radio 1Xtra’s favourite rabble-rouser Ash the Author, the white-knuckle electro-blues exploders Vienna Ditto, feisty psych-rockers Vinyl Staircase and local synth-pop heroes Twin Sun. Febueder, Nobodies Birthday, Here are the Young Men and Uncle Peanut and Deerful also feature on the already tantalizing line-up announcement.
In alphabetical order the 1st line up announcement is: AK/DK / Ash the Author / Deerful, Febueder / Have You Ever Seen the Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS? / Here are the Young Men and Uncle Peanut / Her’s / Idles / Nobodies Birthday / Steve Lamacq (BBC6 Music) / Twin Sun / Vienna Ditto / Vinyl Staircase / Yonaka

I D L E S
After taking a year and a half hiatus from the live scene since their success of their debut EP release 'Welcome' which included BBC Introducing in the Southwest "Band of The Year", they've spent their time to perfect their writing process and "bleed out a shit tonne of songs that we're truly proud of."
Idles are often a five piece POST-PUNK band from BristolLondonNewportBelfast just south of Scotland. They're really really really really really really good. Some say they re-invented being good live as well. Two of them are fat.
KEYWORDS: Heavy. Tight. Chubbs. Guitary. Drum/Bass. Visceral. Amiable? Deaf. Fisty.
Their sounds has been lovingly described by Geraint Davies of CRACK Magazine:
''Across four tracks of oppressive, propulsive scratch/grind/release, Meat feels like listening in on a reluctant confession. Stubborn, unyielding dynamics... ...push through shades of bitter blacks and opaque greys and blinding flashes of white, resolutely human catharsis overseen by a prevalent sense of watertight musicianship honed through countless, relentless hours glaring from Idle to Idle in boxy, dank rehearsal spaces. The result is a sonic Stockholm Syndrome; a public release of a deeply personal, insular process which pleads to be re-contained. Taut, concrete downstrokes constantly drive through Joe Talbot’s clenched, malevolent delivery as he muses on personal politics, everyman frustrations and idiosyncratic abstractions. Devouring influence whole, rejecting them then replacing them and regurgitating each and every one, this is post-punk is its realest sense. Meat is a bold, naked re arrival, a deeply profound statement. It’s quite simply one of the most vital sounds emerging within British music right now."
Thank You x
Welcome to the wonderful world of AK/DK, where musical structure has been joyfully shattered, and the pieces recombined into a unique, prysmic, ever changing barrage of high-energy sound and melody.
AK/DK’s maiden LP, entitled Synths + Drums + Noise + Space, follows a trio of cult releases on Little Miss Echo Recordings, including last year’s ridiculously infectious cassette single Battersea. This new offering represents a slight departure from the more bit-crushed pop-joy of their previous recordings: recorded live and largely improvised, its fizzing layers of arpeggios and raging double drums will appeal to fans of Factory Floor, Dan Deacon, Raymond Scott, Can, Boredoms and Battles. Studio edits were kept to a minimum in favour of a more honest and raw recording, going some way to recreate the raucous spontaneity of their live shows.
Live, AK/DK are an in-demand, high-energy spectacle. As well as opening for a dizzying range of artists like Dan Deacon, Damo Suzuki, Tricky, Fujiya & Miyagi, Anamanaguchi and Civil Civic, they have played art-oriented events such as the ICA's Psychedelica Gala, the Cage-inspired "A Nod To John Cage" event at the De La Warr Pavillion, and a Tate/Shunt curated art and music event at Latitude Festival. They were also hand picked to open for The Dandy Warhols on their entire European tour (as seen in the Battersea video), including a London show at the HMV Forum.
The seeds of Her’s have well and truly rooted themselves in Liverpool. Originally a meeting of minds between Norway’s Audun Laading and Barrow-born Stephen Fitzpatrick, Her’s forged a strong chemical bond through a mutual love of off-kilter humour and outsider art.
Having clocked close to a million streams between the two tracks on their debut single ‘Dorothy’ and ‘What Once Was’, and after following it up with the lackadaisical thrift-store humour of their sun-bleached single ‘Marcel’, Her’s have compiled a rollicking record of their infant career so far. 'Songs of Her’s' was released on the 12th of May, and it includes all their recorded output to date plus six new songs to make for the most complete introduction to their slacker world yet.
'"One thing’s for sure - this is one of the best debuts we’ve heard for quite some time" - DIY
"Hazy melodies mirroring a yearning for an escape" - Louder Than War
"Her’s strike an immediate blow with the brilliantly sludgy take on tropical pop" - Gold Flake Paint
“Portishead doing a Tarantino soundtrack” Huw Stephens, Radio 1
Released in June last year, Vienna Ditto's debut album Circle received airplay on BBC Radio 1, Amazing Radio and BBC6 Music- earning a coveted spot on Tom Robinson's BBC Introducing Mixtape. Nightshift called it “One of the best Oxford albums of recent times” and Frank Skinner said it was “Smashing”, which is nice. Their next 7-track EP Ticks is due for release late April.
“Sexy pop noir” The Daily Sport
Hatty and Nigel first met when he taught her guitar at the age of 11, and although they lost touch in the intervening years the duo were reunited following a chance encounter in the street 8 years later. Originally intended as a bit of fun singing old gospel songs over wobbly synths, Vienna Ditto were prematurely catapulted into the limelight when their first song Long Way Down somehow ended up being played on Huw Stephens’ Radio One show, leading to an appearance on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury Festival. The band have since been given a Maida Vale session for BBC6, received glowing reviews in Q Magazine and Artrocker and appeared on Channel 4’s Hollyoaks Music Show.
2016 saw the band touring the album around the UK and Northern Europe, bolstered- if not financially, then surely in spirit- by the use of their music in several advertising campaigns (most notably for Saks Fifth Avenue and The Polish National Health Fund) and the film Sacred Heart by award-winning Australian director Kosta Nikas.
“With Smoky-voiced femme fatale Hatty Taylor on vocals, London-based three piece Vienna Ditto mix wild-eyed rockabilly riffs with sparse, atmospheric electronica.” Q Magazine

Have You Ever Seen the Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS?
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE JANE FONDA AEROBIC VHS? is a strange bird in the Finnish rock scene, not only because of their devisive name, but also because the band doesn't have a guitar player. Instead melodies and distorted sound walls are created by good old Casio and Eco-organs.
Packed with 60's girl group/soul-melodies, bubble gum punk riffs and pounding drums, which will make your eardrums bleed, this newcomer is truly something to get to know. Have You Ever Seen the Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS? gets it's influences from a rather wide range of genres: all the way from garage rock to doo-wop, rock'n'roll to 80's dream pop and 60's soul and girl groups.
Their debut album Teenage Sweetheart was released in September 2015 by VILD Recordings / Airiston Punk-levyt. Since the record release, the band has been touring constantly all around Finland, performing also on respected festivals like Flow Festival and Ilosaarirock. Have You Ever Seen The Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS? was selected by the Finnish music industry professionals as number no. 1 in the Future Dozen of 2016 wote.
Their music has been noticed all around Europe during this year and they've been featured on publications such as The Line Of Best Fit, Clash Magazine, Under the Radar, MTV Iggy, Forbes and Consequence Of Sound. Have You Ever Seen the Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS? will play their first shows abroad in January at Eurosonic Noordeslag 2016.
